Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs or small trees 3–10 m tall.

Stems: Young branches sharply 4–angled or 4–winged, moderately to densely appressed or spreading pilose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades elliptic to oblong–elliptic, (3.5–)6–15 cm long, (1.5–)4–7 cm wide. Apex subacute to rounded. Base rounded to broadly cuneate. Upper surfaces dull, glabrate or puberulent near midrib; lower surfaces evenly appressed to spreading pilose, eventually glabrate, glandular punctate; coriaceous. Margins entire. Lateral veins usually 8–20, those of upper surface impressed, those of lower surface distinctly raised. Petioles 1–7 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers usually solitary or 2–3 in the leaf axils, peduncles 10–15 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Hypanthium well–developed above ovary, splitting into 4 or 5 lobes when flower opens. Calyx of 4–5 sepals; sepals ca.7–12 mm long, persistent in fruit. Corolla of 4–5 petals, white, elliptic, 10–20 mm long. Stamens white, numerous, distinct; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior, (2)3–4(–7)-celled; ; ovules numerous, placentation axile; style simple, terminal.

Fruit: Berries yellow; globose to pear–shaped; the surface irregular; (2.5–)3–10 cm in diameter; fragrant; the pulp pink or cream–colored. Seeds numerous; seed coat bony.

Ploidy: 2n = 21–28; 30; 32–34; 44

Habitat: Disturbed dry; mesic; and wet forest.

Elevation Range: 15–1,220 m.
